Kava & Tearoom in Sistrunk

Non-Alcoholic Nightlife in Thrive Art District

Sistrunk is known as the heart of Fort Lauderdale's African-American heritage. While the neighborhood declined in post segregation times, revitalization efforts have been underway to restore the fabric of historic Sistrunk. At the same time, the Fort Lauderdale Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has been active in attracting real estate investors and promoting residential and commercial development projects

In February 2025, the Broward City launched the "I Am Sistrunk" community campaign to celebrate the tradition of the Sistrunk, unite the neighborhood, and accelerate economic progress with projects like The Adderly, FATVillage, Thrive Art District, and Progresso Village.

Fort Lauderdale’s investment in the community reflects the responsibility to preserve the Sistrunk legacy for our local neighborhood and Casa De Kava patrons.

What is Kava?

Kava (pronounced kah-vah) is a traditional drink made from the ground root of the kava plant (Piper methysticum), which is native to Vanuatu and other South Pacific Island nations. It's been used for centuries in Polynesian, Micronesian, and Melanesian cultures for its calming and relaxing effects—often consumed at kava bars, celebrations, or as a holistic remedy for stress and anxiety. The kava root contains kavalactones, which promotes relaxation, eases tension, and social calm. Unlike alcohol, kava doesn’t interfere with your cognitive functions (like driving), and you won’t have to worry about a hangover. It just feels a little tingly in your mouth.
